  • Crispy tofu coated in a glossy, sweet–savory glaze.
  • Ready in minutes, full of flavor, and anything but boring.

I still remember the first time I made this Soy Glazed Tofu years ago. I wasn’t expecting much but tofu had always felt a little plain to me. But the moment those little cubes turned golden in the pan, everything changed. The edges crisped, the inside stayed soft, and once that glossy soy glaze clung to every piece… I knew this was a recipe I’d keep making forever.

This dish is simple, quick, and unbelievably satisfying.
The kind of weeknight recipe you make when you want something delicious without spending an hour in the kitchen. The glaze is rich, slightly sweet, savory, and full of umami. The tofu gets crisp without deep frying. And it pairs beautifully with rice, noodles, or even a bowl of veggies.
It’s vegan-friendly, pantry-friendly, and endlessly comforting. This is the proof that tofu can be bold, flavorful, and completely irresistible.

1. Why This Recipe Actually Works

  • Cornstarch creates the perfect crisp exterior.
  • The glaze thickens beautifully and coats every piece.
  • No deep frying, just a simple pan-fry.
  • Uses basic pantry staples.
  • Tofu stays soft inside, crisp outside.
  • Ready in under 20 minutes.

2. Pro Tips

  • Use extra-firm tofu for the best texture.

  • Coat generously with cornstarch for max crispiness.
  • Don’t overcrowd your pan.
  • Adjust sweetness and saltiness to your taste.

Ingredients Explained

Extra-Firm Tofu: Holds shape, crisps beautifully, and soaks up the sauce.
Garlic: Adds depth, warmth, and aroma to the glaze.
Soy Sauce: The salty, umami backbone of the dish.
Rice Vinegar: Balances the sweetness and lifts the flavor.
Sugar: Helps the glaze become sticky and glossy.
Oyster Sauce/Vegan Oyster Sauce: Adds richness and a deep savory note.
Cornstarch: Creates a crunchy exterior when pan-fried.
Green Onion + Sesame Seeds: Finish the dish with freshness and nutty aroma.
Oil: For crisping the tofu without deep frying.

This tofu pairs perfectly with:

Equipment

  • Non-stick or cast-iron pan

  • Mixing bowls

  • Knife & chopping board

  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu

  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp green onion, finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (or vegan oyster sauce)

  • 4 tbsp oil, divided

  • ¼ cup cornstarch

  • ½ cup water

Instructions

1

Prepare the Ingredients

Cut tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Pat the tofu to make it very dry since moisture prevents crisping.

Chop garlic and green onions.

2

Make the Glaze

Mix soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and water.

Stir until smooth and glossy.

Set aside.

3

Coat the Tofu

Add tofu cubes into a bowl.

Sprinkle cornstarch and toss gently until every piece is coated.

The tofu should look powdery, that’s how it gets crispy.

4

Fry Until Crispy

Heat 3 tbsp oil in a pan over medium-high flame.

Add tofu cubes.

Cook on all sides until golden and crunchy (6–8 minutes).

Remove and set aside.

5

Make the Sauce

In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tbsp oil.

Pour in the sauce mixture.

Let it simmer until thick and shiny.

6

Toss & Serve

Add tofu back into the pan.

Toss until fully coated and glossy.

Finish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Serve hot.
